Mardi Gras is one of the most exciting and colorful celebrations in the world, and while New Orleans is the city most associated with it, did you know that Mobile, Alabama, actually has the oldest Mardi Gras in the U.S.?
Beyond the U.S., Mardi Gras has strong French and Portuguese roots, which influenced celebrations not just in New Orleans, but also in places like Rio de Janeiro, Trinidad & Tobago, Nice and Binche. And while, Venice's famous Carnival developed independently, its iconic masquerade tradition later influenced the elaborate masked balls of Mardi Gras in place like New Orleans.
I got a taste of New Orleans’ vibrant culture when I traveled there for my 21st birthday. While it wasn’t during Mardi Gras, I could already feel the energy of the city—the music, food, history, and nightlife make it one of the most unforgettable places I’ve ever visited.
My New Orleans Experience: The Party Capital of Mardi Gras
The French Quarter – The heart of New Orleans, filled with street performers, jazz music, shops, and artists. Even when it’s not Mardi Gras, it feels like a party!
The Food! – Jambalaya, oysters, and of course, beignets from Café du Monde with a hot coffee—an absolute must!
Bourbon Street – Since I had just turned 21, I got to experience New Orleans’ famous open-container policy, which lets you walk around with drinks in hand. It’s lively, chaotic, and exactly what you’d expect from a city that knows how to celebrate.
Casinos & Nightlife – Whether you want to gamble, listen to live music, or go on a ghost tour, there’s never a dull moment.
Mobile, Alabama: The Oldest Mardi Gras in the U.S.
Most people assume that New Orleans is where Mardi Gras began in the U.S., but the first recorded Mardi Gras celebration actually took place in Mobile, Alabama, in 1703—years before New Orleans was founded!
While Mobile it's a smaller city, it has its own unique charm and traditions that make its Mardi Gras different from New Orleans.
More Family-Friendly: Unlike the wild, alcohol-fueled party scene of New Orleans, Mobile’s Mardi Gras is more relaxed and welcoming for all ages.
Moon Pies Instead of Beads: One of the coolest traditions in Mobile is that instead of just throwing beads, they also throw Moon Pies (marshmallow-filled sandwich cookies) from parade floats!
Historic Charm: While smaller than New Orleans, Mobile still has beautiful architecture, French and Southern influences, and a strong community feel.

The French & Portuguese Connection on Mardi Gras & Carnival
Mardi Gras isn’t just an American tradition—it has strong European roots!
Nice, France & Binche, Belgium – The French influence remains strong in Nice, which has one of the largest Carnival celebrations in Europe, while Binche’s UNESCO-recognized festival features costumed "Gilles" throwing oranges for good luck.
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – The world’s largest Carnival started with Portuguese settlers who brought the Entrudo festival, but African and Indigenous influences transformed it into a high-energy Samba parade.
Trinidad & Tobago – The French introduced pre-Lenten masquerade balls, but enslaved Africans created their own parallel Carnival, which led to the creation of Soca music, steelpan drums, and the vibrant J’ouvert tradition.
Venice, Italy – Unlike other Mardi Gras celebrations, Venice's Carnival developed independently, dating back to the Middle Ages. The birthplace of masquerade balls, Venice’s Carnevale di Venezia influenced the tradition of wearing elaborate masks during Mardi Gras. I wrote a full blog about Venice—check it out Here
