Venice, My Favorite City, Is at Risk—Here’s How Travelers Can Help

Venice has held a special place in my heart since my very first visit in 2011. Over the years, I've had the privilege of traveling there countless times, each visit deepening my connection to the city. I still remember the first time I took a gondola ride with my brother—it was a freezing, foggy November afternoon, but I felt that if I didn’t take a gondola ride, I hadn’t truly experienced Venice. Despite the cold, that moment on the canals, gliding past centuries-old buildings, felt like something out of a dream.
But one of my most memorable trips to Venice was in the summer of 2021, when I became one of the first passengers to travel there after the pandemic shutdown. I still remember stepping out of the airport to reporters clapping, filming, and interviewing passengers for televised news, asking: “How does it feel to be on the first direct flight from the U.S. to Venice after the pandemic?” It was surreal. As a welcome gesture, I even received a Venice tote bag, free museum tickets, and a letter from the city.

The Challenges Facing Venice
As much as I love Venice, I can’t ignore the growing impact of tourism on the city. With millions of visitors each year, Venice faces increasing challenges, from over-tourism and environmental strain to rising water levels and the displacement of locals. Some reports suggest that due to rising sea levels and land subsidence, Venice could face severe flooding risks by the end of the century. While efforts like the MOSE flood barrier project are working to prevent this, the reality is that Venice is at risk, and tourism plays a major role in its future.
How We Can Travel More Sustainably?
This is why sustainable travel has become more important than ever. As travelers, we have the power to make choices that reduce our footprint while still enjoying the beauty of places like Venice.
In this post, I’ll be sharing simple ways to travel more sustainably, including how I personally make eco-conscious choices while exploring. I’ll also introduce Glades Air—a company that specializes in eco-friendly, responsible travel, helping travelers explore the world with sustainability in mind.
What is Sustainable Travel?
Sustainable travel is about making conscious choices that minimize negative environmental impact, support local communities, and preserve cultural heritage. It's about being a responsible traveler while still enjoying the beauty of the world.
Key sustainability issues in travel:
Over-tourism – Cities like Venice struggle with overcrowding, which damages historic sites and disrupts local life.
Carbon Footprint – Flights contribute significantly to global emissions.
Waste & Pollution – Many tourist hotspots struggle with excessive waste and single-use plastics.
Ethical Tourism – Not all tourism benefits locals. Some businesses exploit workers and the environment.
How can we, as travelers, make better choices?
It takes little effort to reduce your travel footprint; making small, mindful choices can make a significant difference.
Choose Eco-Friendly Transportation
Opt for direct flights (fewer takeoffs/landings = lower emissions).
Consider trains, buses, or carpooling when possible instead of multiple short-haul flights.
Walk, bike, or take public transport instead of taxis or rental cars.
Stay in Sustainable Accommodations
Book eco-certified hotels and lodges that follow sustainable practices.
Support locally owned accommodations instead of international chains.
Stay in places that reduce plastic waste, use renewable energy, and support local workers.
Eat & Shop Locally
Eat at local restaurants and markets instead of big global chains.
Bring reusable utensils, straws, and shopping bags to reduce waste.
Buy handmade souvenirs from local artisans instead of mass-produced goods.
Be a Responsible Tourist
Follow local customs and dress codes to respect cultural traditions.
Avoid animal tourism that exploits wildlife (e.g., elephant rides, dolphin shows).
Travel during off-peak seasons to reduce over-tourism and support local economies year-round.
